Jewelry has always been a popular choice for Mother’s Day, as it can be a constant and outward visual reminder of the love between a mother and her children.

The modern-day observance of Mother’s Day began over 100 years ago, to honor those women “who have done more for us than anyone in the world.” Now celebrated in some form around the globe, Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate those women who have had a positive influence on our lives. Celebrated on the second Sunday in May in the United States, the occasion is marked by giving moms and mother figures gifts such as candy, flowers, and of course, jewelry.
Jewelry has always been a popular choice for Mother’s Day gifts, as it can be a constant and outward visual reminder of the love between a mother and her children. Rings, bracelets, earrings, and pendant necklaces are all popular jewelry choices for Mother’s Day.
You can make the gift extra special by customizing the jewelry piece beyond deciding what kind to give your mom (earrings vs necklace, for example), by discovering the secret within each gemstone and selecting pieces that align with her personality or characteristics she may want to express or manifest. Our favorite meaningful gemstones to give as Mother’s Day gifts include:
Moonstone
A longtime favorite, this bluish white gem is a perfect selection for Mother’s Day. This stone gives off feminine goddess energy and is said to have a connection to the moon. This stone may help to reduce stress and balance emotion, and throughout history has been connected to having a motherly and nurturing spirit. Moonstone is related to the Crown Chakra and is a stone of protection for mothers and children.
Is it authentic? As moonstones are layered, you should be able to see flickers of light inside. Also, look at the stone in the light at an angle greater than 15 degrees. If the stone reflects light at a higher angle, it’s not a naturally occurring moonstone. You can also do a heat test; a natural stone will take a while to heat up, so if you hold it in your hand, it should remain cold for a while, while a glass “stone” will heat up immediately.

Pink Tourmaline
This gem comes in many different colors of pink, from a very subtle, light shade of pink to a hot, deep color. The gem symbolizes all kinds of happiness, from love to passion, and self-confidence to sensuality. Looking at pink tourmaline in times of stress can help calm heavy emotions and anxiety. This is a great stone to give to mothers, as it represents unconditional love, sympathy, and understanding. Pink Tourmaline connects to the Heart Chakra.
Is it authentic? You can easily see if a pink tourmaline gem is all natural by getting a good look at it, ideally under a magnifying lens. It should have a brownish undertone. Also, it should have some imperfections or “inclusions” since it’s a naturally occurring stone. Anything that’s too perfect is probably glass.
Chrysoprase
Often called the Stone of Venus, this gem most often comes in shades of green and gives off a soothing and relaxing feminine energy. This stone was used throughout history because of its vivid and varied colors. It’s associated with life balance and is said to help relax and recharge mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally, something all moms definitely need. This stone will help promote a life of kindness and love, as well as increasing tolerance of others, and boosting self-esteem. Chrysoprase connects to the Heart Chakra.
Is it authentic? The best way to tell if the chrysoprase you have selected is authentic is to look at it carefully. As a natural stone, it should have small inclusions and natural characteristics. If it’s too perfect, it’s probably manufactured.

Ruby Zoisite
This stone is also called “anyolite” and is a naturally occurring gem that is formed when a ruby combines with a mineral called zoisite. This green and red gem is a popular choice for pendants, rings, and earrings. This stone promotes growth and fertility and is an excellent choice for those moms who are awakened to their spirituality. The combination of this gem (ruby, which is a stone of courage and passion) and this mineral (zoisite, which is a return to self and a healing stone), symbolizes the ability of life forces working together to create something powerful, such as the magic that happens when a mother creates a child. Ruby Zoisite aligns the Heart and the Third Eye Chakras.
Is it authentic? The ruby should be pink to light red, and the zoisite should be dark to emerald green. There may also be a little black spotting in the gem; this is natural. If the green chips away easily, it might be fuchsite instead of zoisite. But, ruby zoisite is not particularly rare, so fakes are not usually found.
Malachite
This green stone has been popular throughout the ages, and used to be called the midwife stone, as it was believed to give off healing energies and lessen the pain of labor during childbirth. Malachite is said to heal old wounds and damaging patterns, helping people move forward, out of their comfort zones. It can spark creativity, help diminish fears, and will give you courage to live your life authentically. For centuries, this stone was used as a talisman for travelers. Cleopatra was so enamored of this stone, she had it ground down and used it for eyeshadow! This stone aligns with both the Heart Chakra and the Throat Chakra.
Is it authentic? Malachite is a very cold stone and will remain cold for a long period of time, even when you hold it. It’ll take a long time to warm up, so if you are holding a piece in your hand and it warms up quickly, it may be manufactured. Malachite is also a very heavy stone and is hard to the touch. And, malachite will always be green with different patterns; if the pattern in different stones is identical or if the stone is a different color, it’s not authentic.
