Natural Ruby
The color red has always been a color of action. Red is associated with things that are fiery and passionate, so it’s only right that ruby is the gemstone for July, which is usually the hottest month of the year.
Rubies have been valued by civilizations around the world for thousands of years. Rubies are mentioned in the Bible several times and is said to be the most precious of the 12 stones created by God. Medieval Europeans wore rubies because they thought the stones would bring them wisdom and wealth while enhancing their love lives. And when developing L. Frank Baum’s book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, MGM studios decided to change his silver slippers to ruby red, to capitalize on the new invention of Technicolor (the ruby color also looked better on the Yellow Brick Road!)
Rubies come in a variety of red colors, with the purple/reddish color known as “pigeon’s blood” being the most valuable. Rubies are cut primarily into oval and cushion shapes, but round, emerald cut, pear, and marquis shapes are also available.
Rubies have a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs scale, which makes them one of the hardest stones available, right behind diamonds. Rubies can be cleaned with warm, soapy water, and steam cleaning and ultrasonic cleaners are usually safe to use (although we do not recommend).
You can easily tell authentic rubies from fakes, or lower quality stones. First, look at the color. The color in real rubies should be spread all over the stone, without any color concentrated in a spot or two. Rubies are hard, so they should not scratch easily. And rubies should keep their beauty and color saturation under any light conditions, including sunlight and fluorescent lighting (they may change hue a bit, varying between red and purple.)
