So then, why would we share digitally altered photographs? Jewelry can be a challenge to photograph for a variety of reasons——size, shiny reflective surfaces, and characteristics of a particular stone——all play a role in how we approach best capturing and showcasing each item. Proper lighting and exposure are key to preserving detail and capturing chatoyancy that some of our stones reveal in certain light. Sure, there are plenty of people that photograph a piece of jewelry and retouch to perfection (and sometimes beyond…). The term “retouch” refers to the process of digitally altering an image to enhance its appearance. There are companies that specialize in retouching jewelry. Image editors can make all sorts of adjustments—from color correction to smoothing and polishing, removing fingerprints and even changing colors to make silver and gold shine brighter. Alterations might be even more dramatic such as adding definition or clarity to a gemstone or superimposing jewelry on models. Changes like this affect the natural properties of a given item, so how can you trust that what you see in a picture is what you’ll also see in person if you were to hold the same piece in your own hands?
